Ten thousand followers from giveaways and mass-follows are worth less than eight hundred people who want to see you because of you. What matters is not how many watch but how many of the watchers are willing to pay for more.

So the number that counts is not your follower count but the number of people who follow your link — and the share of those who convert.

Can you start from zero?

Yes, and most people do exactly that. What you need instead is the willingness to publish regularly for several months without much coming back. On TikTok and Instagram reach almost never comes from followers but from individual videos being distributed — and that takes volume and stamina, not a starting base.

Views become clicks, clicks become subscribers — at sobering rates. Out of a thousand views a handful reach your link, and of those a fraction convert.

That sounds discouraging but is the genuinely useful information: if your goal is a certain monthly amount, you can work backwards to how many views your videos need on average. And then you know before the first shoot whether your subject can even deliver that.

What counts more than followers

A subject that interests strangers. It is not your profile but the video that has to stop someone who does not know you.

Regularity. The most common reason for failure is not weak content but stopping after six weeks.

A path from video to subscription. Without a working link in the bio, any reach is inconsequential.

When an audience really helps

When it fits the subject. An existing community from another field rarely transfers — sometimes it even gets in the way, because those people expect something else from you.

An existing account does help with something else, though: you have already learned how the platform works. That is worth more than the number underneath.
