OnlyFans while studying in Germany: student finance, family health insurance and child benefit (2026)
7 min read · Published on 2026-10-27
Short answer
Running OnlyFans while studying in Germany is allowed – but four offices calculate with your income. In family health insurance your profit may average at most 565 euros a month in 2026, under BAföG 389 euros a month stay exempt, and after your first degree child benefit depends on working at most 20 hours a week. On a student visa from outside the EU, self-employed work needs the immigration office's permission.
Whether you are allowed to is quickly answered: no law bars students from self-employed work on the side. The harder part is what it does to everything attached to your studies – your health insurance, your student finance, your parents' child benefit. This article lists the limits that apply in Germany in 2026. It does not replace advice from your health insurer, the student finance office or a tax adviser.
The 2026 limits at a glance
| What | Limit in 2026 | What counts |
|---|---|---|
| Family health insurance through your parents | total income at most 565 € a month | profit, not revenue; if self-employment is your main occupation, you are out regardless of the amount |
| Student health insurance | no fixed profit limit | your studies must come first; 20 hours a week is the guideline |
| BAföG (student finance) | 389 € a month stay exempt | calculated over the approval period; for a job this equals 603 € gross |
| Child benefit (up to 25) | none during the first degree; afterwards at most 20 hours a week | working time, not earnings |
| Income tax | basic allowance 12,348 € a year | your total taxable income |
| Student visa (non-EU) | self-employed work only with permission | the 140 working days apply to employment only |
Family health insurance: 565 euros a month
If you are covered through your parents' statutory health insurance, your total income may regularly be at most 565 euros a month in 2026 – one seventh of the monthly reference figure. For self-employed work, what counts is profit, meaning revenue minus business expenses, on average rather than the single strong month. The higher limit of 603 euros applies to a mini-job only, not to income from your own account. If you have both, they are added up and the 565 euros apply: a 400-euro mini-job plus 200 euros of profit is already over the line at 600 euros.
Regardless of the amount, family cover ends once self-employment is your main occupation. If your profit is higher or the business becomes the main thing, you insure yourself – as long as your studies come first, usually at the cheaper student rate. Any change in your income has to be reported to the health insurer.
Thinking about working with an agency? Applying takes two minutes – free of obligation and confidential.
Go to the applicationStudent health insurance: your studies come first
If you are insured as a student yourself, there is no fixed limit on profit. What matters is that your studies take up most of your time and energy. The guideline is 20 hours a week during the lecture period; if you regularly work more, or make very high profits, you can still be classed as mainly self-employed. Then the student rate ends and your contribution is based on your profit.
The health insurer decides case by case. You have to report the self-employment either way – at the start, not once they ask. What comes later as a self-employed person is covered in Health insurance and pension for creators.
BAföG: 389 euros a month stay exempt
Since January 2026, 389 euros a month of your own income stay exempt; anything above is deducted from your student finance. It is not calculated month by month but over the whole approval period – a strong month is offset against weaker ones.
For a job as an employee, the allowance equals exactly the mini-job limit of 603 euros gross, because the office first deducts flat amounts for work expenses and social insurance. For self-employed work, profit counts and different deductions apply – how much revenue stays exempt in your case, the student finance office works out with you. You have to declare the income in your application either way.
Child benefit: hours, not earnings
During the first course of training – for most people the first degree – the family benefits office pays until the day before the 25th birthday without asking about income on the side. After the first degree, child benefit continues if you usually work no more than 20 hours a week; how much you earn does not matter.
For child benefit, it is your parents who must report changes to the family benefits office, such as finishing a degree. Otherwise the office can reclaim child benefit that was paid in excess.
Tax and business registration: as for everyone
For the tax office, being a student is no exception. Creating content with the intent to earn is usually a trade that you register, and the profit goes into your tax return. Income tax is only due in 2026 once your total taxable income exceeds the basic allowance of 12,348 euros a year. The other thresholds, including VAT and trade tax, are in Tax on OnlyFans income in Germany.
The tax assessment is not only for the tax office: your health insurer, for example, uses it as proof of your profit. Who reports what to whom is covered in Will my employer find out?
On a student visa: the immigration office first
If you come from outside the EU and hold a residence permit for study, it only entitles you to employment of up to 140 working days a year – jobs as an employee. Self-employed work, and running your own account is that, is not covered. For that you need permission from the immigration office (Ausländerbehörde), before you start; without it the work is not permitted, and that can have consequences for your residence.
Students from the EU, the EEA and Switzerland are not affected.
What to settle before you start
| Office | What you settle there |
|---|---|
| Health insurer | whether family cover stays or the student rate applies – and whether your profit fits |
| Student finance office (BAföG-Amt) | how your profit is counted; declare it in the application |
| Family benefits office (via your parents) | whether you are still in your first course of training; afterwards the weekly hours |
| Tax office | register the trade, tax registration questionnaire |
| Immigration office (non-EU only) | permission for the self-employed work |
In a first conversation we go through which of these offices matter in your case; for the tax side we put you in touch with tax advisers who know this business.
