Telegram for creators: build the channel, keep the payments off it

Short answer
Telegram works as a free channel in front — fast, direct, no algorithm in between. It does not work as a checkout: you have no payment protection there, no age verification and no recourse when someone forwards your content. The free channel leads to the platform, not around it.
Telegram is a good waiting room and a bad checkout. Both for the same reason: there is nothing between you and the people — no algorithm, but no protection either.
What a free channel can do
An open Telegram channel reaches every subscriber directly. No reach throttle, no censored preview, no question of whether the post gets distributed. For announcements, teasers and pointing at a new release it is the fastest route there is.
That is exactly what we use it for: as a waiting room. The channel shows enough to make joining worthwhile and leads to the platform where people pay. Same role as a trial subscription — a taste, not a meal.
Why the checkout does not belong on Telegram
Paid Telegram groups look tempting: no platform fee, direct payment. The price is on the back.
- No payment protection. Collecting by bank transfer or a payment service means collecting at your own risk. Chargebacks, frozen accounts, payment providers that exclude adult content — all of that hits you directly, not the platform. What happens when a payment provider shuts you down is in the piece on account closure.
- No age verification. The platforms check who pays and who appears on camera. In a Telegram group you check that yourself — or not at all, and that is the real risk.
- No recourse against forwarding. Whatever sits in a group is somewhere else within seconds. On the platforms there are at least watermarks and a process against leaks; on Telegram there is neither.
A platform taking twenty percent is not a loss but the price of billing, age checks and a legal framework. What that costs in detail is in the piece on fees.
A free channel in front vs. a paid group
| Free channel as an entrance hall | Paid Telegram group | |
|---|---|---|
| Payment protection | not needed | none — chargebacks land on you |
| Age verification | not needed, because only public material is in there | you do it yourself, or not at all |
| Recourse against forwarding | irrelevant, it is public | none |
| Platform fee | none | none — but you carry every risk yourself |
| What belongs in it | announcements, teasers, pointers | nothing that is worth money |
A platform taking twenty per cent is not a loss, it is the price of billing, age verification and a legal framework — exactly the three rows above.
What you can do about forwarding
You cannot prevent it entirely. What helps: only show things in the channel that could be public anyway. Everything worth money stays behind the paywall. Telegram also lets you disable forwarding and saving in a channel — that stops nobody with a camera, but it makes the convenient route inconvenient.
Moderation, honestly counted
An open channel with comments turns into a group, and a group needs moderation — otherwise it fills with adverts for everything within three weeks. If you cannot plan for moderation, switch comments off. With us the chat team reads along, since it answers on every channel anyway.
Our take
Channel yes, checkout no. Telegram is the fastest line to people who already know you and a poor place to take money. How we build the channel into your setup is something we work out in the first call.
