Chatting as a side job: what is realistic alongside studies or a full-time job

Chatting is one of the few side jobs that genuinely works from anywhere and is still more than click work. It has quirks worth knowing before you start.

Why it works as a second job

Fans write in the evening, at night and at weekends — exactly when a day job or a lecture is over. The shifts already sit where most people have time. And because everything happens in text, you need nothing but a computer and a stable connection.

The second reason is the training. For many side jobs, teaching someone does not pay off because they are gone in three months. Here it is the other way round: whoever knows the models and the regular fans gets noticeably better over time — and earns more for it.

How many hours are realistic

Two or three shifts a week is a common start alongside something else. A shift runs three to five hours, depending on the arrangement. More is possible, less too — the number is negotiable, reliability is not: a shift you commit to gets covered, because nobody else is writing on that account during it and someone else's income depends on it.

Anyone who enters their availability only sporadically earns little. Not as a punishment, but because regular fans build relationships, and those only form when somebody is reliably there.

How the pay is structured

The usual arrangement combines a fixed amount per shift or hour with a share of the sales that demonstrably came out of your conversations. The fixed part covers the time, the share rewards whoever sells well.

An honest note: anyone promising a beginner a fixed dream salary for a side job is selling you something. At the start the pay is in the range of other qualified side jobs; upwards it is open, but performance decides that, not the contract. What applies for tax

A side income is taxable too, from the first euro. Depending on how the collaboration is set up, you register a business or invoice as a freelancer. If you are studying or employed alongside, keep two things in view: the thresholds for social insurance and student status, and — if you are employed — a look at your own employment contract.

Who it does not suit

• Anyone who cannot keep fixed times. An hour here and there when it happens to fit does not work.
• Anyone who struggles to draw a line. Unpleasant messages arrive. If you take them to bed with you, the fun is gone in two weeks.
• Anyone who just wants to chat. Chatting is sales work in conversation, not customer service.
